1975 SEIKO Pogue
Chronograph Automatic
Black Dial

One of the most interesting and distinctive watches from the 1970s, this is a treasured timepiece, always popular and unique! This is a vintage Seiko Pogue chronograph automatic wristwatch black dial, ref. 6139-6002 and dated from March 1975 – All original!

Produced from 1969 through 1979, the Seiko 6139 Chronograph Automatic was designed for use by pilots. Considered a milestone in the history of Seiko watches, the 6139 was the first automatic chronographs to be produced in Japan and was the first to feature a vertical clutch system.

The Seiko 6139 is the first automatic chronograph watch worn in space by Colonels William Pogue. He was an American astronaut known for his service on the NASA Skylab space station. He was famously part of the NASA Skylab mission in 1973 and stayed there for almost 3 months (84 days) – until February 1974. Colonel William Pogue was pictured during the mission wearing a yellow dial Seiko 6139 chronograph automatic – which is where the nickname “Pogue” comes from as it is one of the rare space watches of the world.

It is a self-winding watch powered by an original Seiko automatic chronograph (60 seconds – 30 minutes – pillar wheel – no manual wind) movement with a sophisticated excentre self-winding mechanism with just one gear stage. It features the caliber 6139B, 17 jewels, day/date indicator (day quicksets by pushing the crown deeper, 2 languages / date quicksets by pushing the crown less deep), 45 hours power reserve, 21,600 A/h, Japan made.

This movement is similar to the Seiko caliber 6139A, only a minor modification of switching mechanism (dial side).

Considered by many, the 6139 is the first automatic chronograph marketed early in 1969 for the Japanese market. The 6139 movement is also a well-known and highly regarded workhorse, with many different dial combinations offered.

Under the umbrella of the Pogue models, all memorable in their own right, today we are offering one of the dial variants, the matte black dial. After 45 years, it still has the original matte black dial with silver hour markers, white minute/second track, and silver/luminous matching hands. A red sweep second-hand for the chronograph and the 30-minute sub-dial located at 6 o’clock with a red hand as well. The day/date window is located at 3 o’clock. It also features an inner rotating bezel in gray color with crisp silver markings.

Cased in a 41 mm cushion case, all in stainless steel. The outer fixed “Pepsi” bezel in metallic red and blue. Water resistant. Original unsigned crown and pushers – top pusher: chrono start/stop and bottom pusher: chrono reset.

This watch also comes in the original tapered “H” link Seiko fold over clasp bracelet bracelet, all in stainless-steel. This bracelet will fit a wrist up to 7” (17.8cm).

It is a very good looking watch. Runs very well and keeps great time!

Vintage watches are traditionally smaller than today's watches. Men’s watches typically measure between 29-36mm wide (some larger, some smaller) excluding the crown. In the listing details we typically try to do our best to list all pertinent dimensions of a watch. If you don't see it, or we failed to do so, please reach out to us. Women’s watches from the 1900s-1970s were also much smaller than today's offerings. Please also feel free to ask any questions you have pertaining to size.

We prefer to shoot photographs outside when weather is permitting. However, when we shoot indoors, please be aware that we shoot our photographs inside of lightboxes that are lit with 360 LED bulbs. This indeed magnifies any flaws. Usually, they are much less obvious to the naked eye. Having said that, we never photoshop any of our photography, remove blemishes, etc. We adjust lighting when necessary, but what you see is what you are getting, and we take pride in that.

The condition is pre-owned.
The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear but is fully operational and functions as intended.
Please review the photos and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

It will be carefully packed.
